Australia is a multicultural, egalitarian society, built on looking after one another and mateship.
Unfortunately, in every society, there are always some people who are drawn to violence, hate and anger.
It has been heartening to see all of those who have stepped up to donate blood after a call out from the Australian Red Cross. Aussies helping each other out. Every time there is a situation or crisis, people step up.
What is not helping is the continued speculation on social media. We do not have all of the facts, so people rush to assign blame. It breeds hatred and mistrust.
Now is the time for Australia to come together and say NO.
No to hatred.
No to racism.
No to violence.
No to lies and harmful speculation.
Ahmed Al Ahmed represents the true Australian spirit, one that runs towards danger when help is required. We have countless historical examples of many other Australians doing the same. He is truly an Australian hero. He didn’t hesitate to act because of someone else’s background, he stepped up, and for that Australia is grateful.
